Dunedin Kindergarten Teachers become Quit Card Providers

Dunedin Kindergarten Teachers become Quit Card Providers

In April a group of teachers from Dunedin Kindergartens undertook Quit Card training.  Participating in the training allows staff to write Quit Cards (vouchers) that people can take to their local pharmacy and receive up to 12 weeks supply of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products such as gum, patches or lozengers for only $5 per product.  Publicising this in kindergarten or centre panui is a positive message to share with whānau.

Three teachers who attend the training were happy to share their motivation for participating.

I want to be helpful and support people, families of our children, to stop smoking. It is good to get the word out about Smokefree 2025.

I hope that by attending this course I will be better equipped to encourage and support potential quitters in the most effective way.

I feel that as an Early Childhood Education teacher I am in the position to be a role model/advocate for people/whānau who want to stop smoking and to help them reach their goal.  The Little Lungs Programme has highlighted to me that even smoking by an open door is dangerous.  This is due to the second hand smoke that lingers as there are around 4000 different toxic chemicals in just one cigarette and 70 of those give you cancer.  If I can help/support just one person to quit smoking then they will hopefully be around a lot longer for their tamariki and for their whānau...
