Being passionate about Smokefree is the way forward. Our centre participated in the Little Lungs – Pūkahukahu Iti workshop back in 2013. Since then I’ve trained as a QuitCard provider which has enabled me to offer support to staff and some families at meetings. Supporting people to give up smoking has extended to my life outside of the centre too. Last weekend I had a conversation with someone involved in the mining industry and I encouraged them to continue with being Smokefree. I think having personal connections with people helps and I consider that I’m in a good position to be able to do this. I know about the struggle to quit and although I’m not paid to support people to do it I think it’s part of ethical practice and it’s morally right. Achieving a Smokefree nation by 2025 is about everyone; it’s for everyone and it relies on everyone playing their part.
